Live Poetry

Year 10 trip to Poetry Live event

On Wednesday 5 February 2025, 34 Year 10 pupils attended a Poetry Live! event at The Forum in Bath with members of the English Faculty. This was a wonderful opportunity to see and listen to some of the poets whose work they study as part of GCSE English Literature 'Power and Conflict'.

This annual event, packed with young people from around the region, started with the Chief Examiner going through how to approach an Unseen Poem. The five poets in attendance read and discussed poems from the Power and Conflict Anthology, starting with Imtiaz Dharker talking about 'Tissue'. The Poet Laureate Simon Armitage, always popular with our staff, read his poem 'Remains'. Our pupils were enthralled by the performances of John Agard and Daljit Nagra in particular, who brought their poems to life with personal stories.

"Our pupils were great ambassadors for Deer Park, making the teachers who accompanied them very proud. Overall, it was lovely day. Well done everyone!" Mrs Chaplin, English Teacher

Austin: "An experience to remember, an opportunity to see the great poetry we have been taught about."

Libby: "I really enjoyed watching all the poets perform their poems and talk about where they got their inspiration."

Dan: "It was great. I particularly liked John Agard."

Lucy: "I enjoyed how the poets made you feel included."

Tayla: "The trip was really interesting and really helpful towards my annotations."

Charlotte: "It has helped my understanding of the story behind what the poets wrote about."

Alex: "Interesting to see the poets we learn about. It gave us a greater depth of understanding about what they are trying to convey."

Flo: "It was interesting to see the poets present their poems live."
