On Friday 27 September 2024, Year 9 were off timetable and, in their tutor groups, took part in a Financial Awareness Conference with twenty-three staff from St James's Place Wealth Management in Cirencester, who led the sessions. Deer Park staff switched roles and took on the responsibilities of classroom Teaching Assistants, creating a buzzing atmosphere in the classrooms.

Our pupils participated in three sessions. The first session focused on Personal Finance and Savings. During this session, pupils learned about opening bank accounts and relevant banking terminology, using a case study centred around a character named Deeya. They were introduced to the concept of interest and explored various options for savings accounts, emphasising the importance of selecting the right account for their individual circumstances.

The focus of the second hour was on Budgeting. Pupils examined the difference between wants and needs, as well as the value of deals, discounts, and offers. They learned how to determine whether a deal was truly worthwhile and received advice on effective budgeting.

The final hour was dedicated to learning about Borrowing, including the various types of borrowing. Students were taught the difference between manageable and unmanageable debt. At the end of the morning, pupils completed evaluation forms and were provided with information about organisations that support individuals facing financial difficulties.
