GCSE Drama Practical Exams

Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE Drama performances

YEAR 10

On Thursday 26 November 2020, Year 10 GCSE Drama pupils kicked off the winter practical exam season in Expressive Arts by completing their Theatre in Education drama performances. As part of the GCSE Drama course, pupils must plan and rehearse a devised piece of work which they are assessed on whilst performing to a live audience. Pupils created an adaptation of a well-known fairy tale, with a young target audience in mind.

Lexie who played one of the ugly sisters in Cinderella, said ‘ I had so much fun! I loved the encouragement from the other groups whilst performing.’

Imogen, who performed as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz, said ‘I was really nervous to do the exam but everyone created a supportive atmosphere that gave me confidence to do my best.’

Unfortunately, due to the second period of lockdown, inviting external visitors in to school to watch these performances was not possible. However, with Deputy Head Mr Clutterbuck on hand to support, the exam was live streamed so friends and family could watch from home, supporting pupils and providing praise in the Q&A section on the event.

Phoebe whose group performed a mash up of Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland said ‘I felt so supported before my exam by all the pupils and all the Expressive Arts team, they gave me the confidence boost to perform to my best ability and I found it inspiring seeing other people take on their performance! I had so much fun!'

Giving the Year 10s that extra encouragement, their Year Leader Mrs Ellison attended the evening and commented 'What a fabulous evening! I was so impressed. All the pupils were confident and well-rehearsed, and I particularly enjoyed the comedy elements. Well done and thank you!'

YEAR 11

The Year 11 GCSE Drama scripted performance evening will take place on Thursday 10 December 2020, where once again, pupils must perform to a live audience. We have made the decision to NOT have parents and friends attend this event in person, due to capacity in our drama studio making it difficult to socially distance an audience. We will once again be live streaming the evening, so that parents and others in our school community can watch and be a part of the audience for our Year 11 pupils, remotely. The event will start at 4pm running until approximately 7pm.  Each performance is between 10 and 20 minutes long. All the extracts performed have been approved and come highly recommended by exam board.  Year 11 pupils will be given the link to the live event and can then forward it on to those they want to invite to watch the event.

‘Like all their other practical drama exams, the Year 11s have been working incredibly hard on these performances. Every piece of work they rehearse, they aim higher and push themselves and each other, even further to create fantastic drama. I am really excited to watch their work.' Mrs Gleed, Head of Expressive Arts
