Learning from home

Following the closure of the school for most pupils from Monday 23 March 2020, we are collating information and links here for parents and pupils alike, so that you can hopefully find what you need in one place.

Whilst the continuation of learning and stretching of young minds is important (see message from Headteacher Chiquita Henson on 25 March), these are challenging times and it is also imperative that we support our young people emotionally through this crisis. Our pupils are currently being advised to do school work for 3 or 4 hours a day (Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 respectively), see Our Short Term Plans with Interim Timetable below, but we need to also spend time together in our family units - baking, drawing, reading, watching a film, playing a board game, planting seeds, doing DIY - and simply hanging out, chatting, allaying worries, and hopefully laughing a lot!

Why not ask your child to teach you something, for example phrases in another language or  how to play a video game? Ask them to share their favourite music and explain why they like it? Suggest they talk on the phone with older relatives or friends to help the older generation become more confident about using video chat technology like FaceTime, Skype or WhatsApp?

We are all likely to be spending more time online with friends to compensate for not being able to see them in person. So whether using a platform you already know or something new, please ensure that both you and your children are doing so safely. Go to ThinkuKnow...

In the event of a school closure our pupils will be expected to:

  • Take responsibility for their own learning;
  • Check SMHW and their school emails daily for notifications, instructions, and feedback;
  • Spend a minimum of 3 or 4 hours a day on lesson activities and tasks set by their teachers;
  • Complete all tasks on paper or online as required, meet deadlines and submit finished work to their teachers;
  • Engage in any other learning activities their teachers have prepared, including extended tasks;
  • Read for a minimum of 30 minutes a day;
  • Apply the transferrable skills they have developed and be resilient and resourceful;
  • Show us what they can achieve!

We would we grateful if you could ensure your son/daughter:

  • Is able to access SMHW and his/her school email and routinely checks these;
  • Has an appropriate space in which he/she can learn independently;
  • Engages in the lessons and learning opportunities provided by his/her teachers;
  • Spends 3-4 hours learning each day and completes all tasks on time;
  • Keeps in touch with his/her teachers.

  1. For the fortnight from Monday 23 March to Friday 3 April 2020:

    Pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9 are expected to spend a minimum of 3 hours a day learning remotely. To aid their planning we have provided a draft timetable (see below). Teachers will assign tasks on Show My Homework.

    Pupils in Years 10 and 11 are expected to spend a minimum of 4 hours a day learning remotely and again we have provided a draft timetable (see below). They will also be assigned tasks through Show My Homework and some may be invited to join virtual classrooms.

  2. Easter Holiday, Monday 6 April to Friday 17 April.
  3. After the Easter Holiday, from Monday 20 April 2020, we are planning to increase the number of virtual lessons. We are currently working with our teachers to ensure we can achieve a smooth transition to new ways of learning, initially in Key Stage 4. Pupils should be aware that there will be a new timetable and the need to log on and join a lesson.

Please note that pupils can access Microsoft Office 365 via RM Unify and it can be downloaded to a number of devices for each child's login. After the Easter break, more of our Key Stage 4 classes will start using MS Teams, so we advise setting up Office 365 beforehand if possible.

Pupils and parents should in the first case contact their tutor or teacher with any learning questions. Any general school queries should be sent to enquiries@deerparkschool.net.

 

Online Safety

Despite these very challenging times, we are fortunate to be able to stay in touch with friends and family using a variety of methods but obviously it is important that we all stay safe online.
