Primary Sport Term 3

Primary sport at Cirencester Deer Park School, Term 3 2020

At the start of 2020, primary sport at Cirencester Deer Park School involved us hosting two School Games events and, in addition, our Primary Sports Coordinator was working with pupils at two local primary schools. School Games is a national project designed to increase sports and physical activity participation at both primary and secondary school.

The first primary event of the term was the Year 3/4 Key Steps Gymnastics Festival on Monday 27 January, involving pupils from Avening, St Lawrence, Powell’s, St Mary’s, Chesterton, Rodmarton and Ashton Keynes primary schools. Pupils were scored competitively in a Vaulting competition and they completed gymnastics training stations focused on the Beam and Floorwork. Many of the participants were competing for the first time and we were able to develop core skills related to flexibility, balance and co-ordination. The event involved our excellent Year 9 Young Leaders, coaches from Cotswold Gymnastics Club and the School Games lead, Helen Pauling. The event  ran smoothly, with pupils able to perform a range of gymnastic moves in safe conditions.

Young Leader roles included spotters for Health and Safety, as well as station leads for the Beam and Floorwork; roles were dependent on confidence and experience in gymnastics.

Beth, Year 9 Young Leader: “My favourite primary event this term was the Gymnastics. It was fun and it was good to see everyone showing their gymnastic skills. My role was leading the warm ups and allowing pupils to practice moves on the floor."

On Monday 3 February the Year 5/6 Quick Sticks Hockey District Final was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The participating schools had all qualified from their local District event. The primary schools taking part were Temple Guiting, Powell’s, Cirencester, Fairford, Stow, St Lawrence, St James and Ebrington, Bourton, Hatherop, Ashton Keynes and Bledington.  Our Year 9 Young Leaders officiated the eight pitches on our large astroturf - there were two officials on each pitch, with two more Young Leaders on timekeeping duties. The Young Leaders underwent training beforehand to ensure they understood how to officiate, including an in depth review of the rules and advice on how to stop and start games. The winners of this event - Temple Guiting, Powell’s and St James and Ebrington - have qualified for the County Final at Cheltenham College.

Ben, Year 9 Young Leader: “My favourite event was the hockey. It was nice to see so many young people playing. I also enjoyed it because I officiated games which was fun. I also learnt lots of different skills that I could use in later life.”

During Term 3 PE Teacher and Primary Sports Coordinator Mr Cumming also visited Kemble Primary School to teach multi-skills to Year 1 pupils and he completed Young Leader training with Year 5 pupils from Stratton Primary School.

At Kemble, Mr Cumming taught a range of multi-skills to small groups of Year 1, allowing the pupils to develop some of the core skills needed to participate in sport and physical activity. Mr Cumming said that “the pupils did very well and completed a range of different fun challenges related to throwing and catching.”

At Stratton, he focused on developing Year 5 pupils' leadership skills. They completed a booklet looking at the key skills needed for being a Young Leader, learnt fun Primary Sport Games and completed a time log for each session as evidence. Lessons took place in both the classroom and outside on the hard courts. Mr Cumming commented “The Year 5 pupils progressed well and completed a range of leadership roles including officiating and leading activities. This will prepare them well for their Young Leader roles later in the year.”
