Young Singer of the Year 2019
Third annual Young Singer of the Year event
On Wednesday 1 May 2019, a week after our Young Musician of the Year, the Deer Park Expressive Arts Faculty hosted our 3rd annual Young Singer of the Year event. Entries this year came from across all school years, performing a range of styles from Classical and Musical Theatre to Pop. The quality of the 21 finalists was incredibly high and judges had a very hard job deciding who to give runner up and winner awards to.
Some of the singers are new to performing and some are more experienced - a number had performed at our 2018 Talent Show in November last year and it was lovely to see them again. It was a fantastic opportunity for the younger pupils to watch established Year 11 singers and see the high standard they could, with hard work and determination, be performing at in a few years’ time.
Judges commented on the quality of performances this year and every pupil who performed should feel incredibly proud of what they achieved. Every time they perform, their confidence grows and their skill improves. Hazel in Year 10 commented: "I always enjoy participating in Young Singer, it is such an exciting event and really nice to watch all my peers perform as well and seeing everyone grow in confidence."
Key Stage 3 Overall Winner: Tim C (7DU), with his excellent performance of ‘That’ll Be The Day’ by Buddy Holly. Tim also accompanied himself on guitar demonstrating his range of musical skills.
Tim said "I didn’t expect to win at all, I was just really happy to take part and always enjoy performing, especially a song that means a lot to me."
Runners up: Grace T (8DE) and Isabel C (7LI)
Key Stage 4 Overall Winner: Max S (10FR) singing ‘Supermarket Flowers’ by Ed Sheeran. Max moved the audience with his sensitive and emotional performance of this song.
Max commented: "It was a very enjoyable experience and I was very surprised to have won because the standard of the other performers was so high."
Runners up: Rosa E (10DE) and Oliver Adams (11LI)
Young Singer of the Year is one of my favourite events on the Calendar as it gives our singers a platform to show off their vocal skills. It is so important to have events like this for singers to have something to prepare for and help motivate them in improving their singing and performance skills. I am very proud of all who took part, well done!

We look forward to seeing all our participants getting involved in upcoming Expressive Arts events, including the Year 8 Songwriting Project (May/June), Party in the Park (July) and the whole school musical Grease (February 2020).
We are delighted to have Ben O’Sullivan back working with us from The Music Works on our 3rd Year 8 Songwriting Project. Our 30 participants already have lyrics and melody for their song's verses!
