Volunteering Evening
Volunteering opportunities for young people.
On Thursday 20 September 2018, Cirencester Deer Park School welcomed in a range of organisations to talk about volunteering opportunities for young people. The evening was the starting point of a range of events linked to World Peace Day and aimed to show Deer Park pupils how they could get involved in volunteering and how they could make a difference to others whilst helping to create a future for themselves.
Organisations at the event included VS0, National Citizenship Service, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, Projects Abroad, Model United Nations Alfrink and previous voluntary expeditions to South America (with Outlook Expeditions) and Ghana 2017/18 (African Adventures). The stalls provided details on local, national and international volunteering placements and it was fantastic to see the young people engaging in conversations about what they could do.
In addition to the stalls, our Ghana 2019 team had, together with our fantastic Expressive Arts team, organised live music with impressive ongoing sets from Year 9 and Year 10 pupils. Ghana 2019 parents and pupils also pulled together to offer a delicious range of food including pulled pork rolls, hot popcorn, home made cakes and Ali’s (Year 10) falafel stall which was a source of entertainment as well as tasty food.
"On Thursday evening we had the opportunity to join the World Peace Day kick off. We really enjoyed talking about our Model United Nations Alfrink Conference with parents and pupils of Deer Park. I also had a chance to see the other projects that were presented. It never stops to amaze me how dedicated Deer Park School is to give their pupils a possibility to join in global awareness and voluntary projects in the UK and abroad. This dedication to prepare students the best we can for the challenges of the 21st century is something Deer Park School and Alfrink College share. I always return from Deer Park School inspired. This trip was no exception. Thanks!" Marcel de Haas, Head of the Bilingual Department, Alfrink College
“There was a wonderful atmosphere. The room was full of positivity and possibilities. It was great to see pupils, past and present, finding out how they can make a difference.” Miss Lillington
The event was a great way to kick start our World Peace Day events and for the pupils to explore the benefits of helping others.
"This was a brilliant opportunity for pupils to learn more about ways they can make a difference in their local community and beyond. There was a lot of interest in the Ghana trip and we look forward to seeing the Deer Park link with our project schools strengthened when our Year 10 Ghana 2019 volunteer group travel at Easter next year." Miss Bluett, Ghana 2018 Trip Leader
We all contribute to the communities in which we live, learn and work in different ways and it was lovely to see pupils asking questions of our guests and showing genuine interest in how they can make a difference both at home and further afield. This was a very worthwhile evening and made all the more special by the pupils and parents who gave generously of their time and volunteered to support this event. Thank you
