Young Singer of the Year Competition
On Wednesday 2 May 2018 we held the 2nd annual Cirencester Deer Park School Young Singer of the Year competition. After the success of last year’s competition, entries for this year soared and the quality of the 18 finalists was at a very high level.
It was lovely to see some singers who are new to performing and some who are more experienced. A fantastic opportunity also for new Year 7 singers to watch established Year 11 singers and see the high standard they could, with hard work and determination, be performing at in a few years’ time.
We had singers from each year group performing songs in a range of styles including Musical Theatre, where last year's Key Stage 3 winner, Hazel, performed ‘Quiet’ from Matilda; and a variety of Pop songs, from Max singing a James Arthur hit to Rose performing the jazzy ‘Cry Me a River’.
Judges commented on the quality of performances this year and every pupil who performed should feel incredibly proud of what they achieved. Every time they perform, their confidence grows and their skill improves.
One parent commented: ‘Your Singer of the Year was a joy to watch and it was so nice, also to see a lovely progression of many of the students from last year.’
Our judges had some tough decisions to make but the Key Stage 3 Young Singer of the Year award went to Molly VM who wowed the audience, and made them laugh, with her outstanding performance of the song ‘Taylor the Latte Boy’. After the comedy of Molly’s song, we were nearly brought to tears as we were blown away by Evie in Year 11 who took the title of Key Stage 4 Young Singer of the Year for her phenomenal performance of the song ‘Lost in the Waves’. Evie tackled the very moving, mature subject of the song with great sophistication and performed it at a top professional standard.

You may have recognised both winners from their leading roles in our production of Legally Blonde Jr earlier this year, as well as Rosa, Tommy, Mia and Max, who all demonstrated their versatile vocal ability as they took on new challenges and styles of songs.
We look forward to seeing all our participants again getting involved in other upcoming Expressive Arts events from our Summer Showcase, Songwriting Project and Talent Show.
I would like to thank and congratulate all participants for working hard on their pieces to perform and showing a dedication to singing. And thank you to the parents for supporting their children by coming to watch - pupils really appreciate and gain a lot from the performing experience.
