Primary Sport
Primary sports at Cirencester Deer Park School.
The Cirencester Deer Park School PE Faculty has had a very successful start to the Primary Sport Programme for 2017-2018. We have hosted a variety of sports events since the start of the school year in September, including a Football Festival (Years 5/6), Quicksticks Hockey (Year 5/6), Multi Skills (Years 3/4), Tag Rugby (Years 5/6) and Indoor Athletics (Years 3/4). Many local pupils from our family of primary schools - Chesterton, Kemble, Powell’s, Sapperton, Siddington and Stratton Schools - have participated in these events. Each event has been highly competitive, with excellent skills being shown in a fun and positive environment.
In order for these events to run successfully, we utilise Deer Park’s Year 10 Games Captains and Year 9 Young Sports Leaders. Their roles include officiating, administration and coaching. All our pupils have set a very high standard this year with many Primary School teachers commenting on how good the Young Leaders have performed so far.
Our pupils have demonstrated excellent resilience, performed their jobs very professionally and have been always eager to help. Year 9 Young Leader Tilly said “The events have gone really well, the children are very enthusiastic and wanting to do well. It is really good being a Young Leader. I enjoy helping young children with their sport.”
On Monday 20 November 2017, Deer Park combined the official opening of our new artifical playing surfaces with a Primary Indoor Athletics event. Once the primary pupils had completed the Indoor Athletics, we moved outside onto our main astro pitch and coaches from Cirencester Hockey Club provided an introductory hockey session for the pupils. This fun-filled session focused on key skills such a dribbling and passing. We also had Olympic and England hockey player Mark Gleghorne in attendance to help inspire the pupils! One of the primary school parents emailed recently to say “thank you for the work you put into the athletics tournament” and that “it was lovely to see the primary school children having such a fabulous time.”
Ms Henson, Headteacher commented "I was very pleased that headteachers and PE leaders within our family of schools spoke so highly of our provision at a recent Partnership Meeting on Tuesday 28 November and to listen to the compliments they all paid our young sports leaders. They commended their maturity and the way in which they interact with younger children, referee and marshal events. I am extremely proud of the team and we aim to continue to coordinate a programme that brings pupils from local schools together through skills festivals and competitive games."
In 2018 we will be hosting:
- Years 3/4 Key Step Gymnastics Festival
- Years 5/6 Quicksticks Hockey Final
- Primary Cross Country
- Years 5/6 High 5 Netball
- Deer Park Cluster Gym Festival, open to all Primary School Years
- Primary District Athletics
- Primary Area Athletics.
We look forward to encouraging and inspiring the next generation of keen young sports pupils.
