Visit to University of Oxford
As part of our ongoing Careers Education, Information, Advice and Guidance programme, Mrs Stubbs and Miss Brace accompanied some of our ‘new’ Year 11 to Lady Margaret Hall at the University of Oxford on Wednesday 7 June for the day. The aim of the day was to give pupils an experience of this high profile university and also debunk some of the myths surrounding Oxford students.
We were very privileged to be working with Marrium Khan (Outreach Officer for Lady Margaret Hall) who we have met previously and who is a former student of the University. It was also lovely to spend time with two current students at different points of their academic journey and we are very grateful to them for giving up their time to spend the day with us and sharing their stories and experiences.
Miss Brace said: “It was lovely to see how the pupils engaged. They started the day very quiet and shy but as the day progressed they became more confident and extrovert. The University representatives were able to disprove the stereotype of Oxford students.”
The pupils who took part in the day found it a valuable experience and one of them commented: "I have really enjoyed being here today. It wasn’t what I was expecting. I would definitely consider this in the future when looking ahead to University.”
Emily said: "The experience has developed my ideas on the pathways that I would like to take in the future. It has also given me the reassurance that university isn’t as scary as it seems."
Following our visit to the University of Oxford, we took a different group of ‘new’ Year 11 pupils over to the Royal Agricultural University on Wednesday 14 June. For Year 11s from September there will be a series of events and dates for the diary in preparation for moving on from Deer Park post 16. Between September and Christmas there will be our Post 16 Information Evening, the Careers Convention (this year held at Deer Park and open to all pupils from Year 8 upwards) and many post 16 providers’ Open Days and Evenings. Further details will follow in September.
