50 Years Anniversary: Daytime Learning

50 years of comprehensive education and still going strong!

What better way to celebrate 50 years of comprehensive education in Cirencester than by offering our pupils a taste of learning across the last five decades and opening our doors to the wider community and giving former pupils, parents, staff and governors the opportunity to relive their memories of the school.

On Wednesday 12 October 2016 we were proud to mark Cirencester Deer Park’s 50th anniversary as a comprehensive school and to celebrate our achievements and those of our pupils over time. Current pupils learnt about the school’s anniversary in their assemblies and during the day school staff turned back the clock to recreate teaching and learning experiences from across the decades. Each faculty represented a decade and dressed and taught accordingly.

Overhead projectors were dusted off and plugged in in Humanities as a part of their 1990s theme and mechanical hand held slide projectors were used in Computing to reflect the technology of the 1980s. Colleagues and the curriculum went psychedelic in Science as they had drawn the 1970s and both English and Maths recreated the 1960s with ‘Music and Movement’ on the wireless and the Maths behind the Apollo landings.  It was a very special  and unique day!

I was impressed by colleagues’ creativity and overwhelmed by their commitment to our ‘re-enactment’: a clear demonstration of their readiness to go the extra mile and more. Our pupils enjoyed and learnt from the experience too.

Chiquita Henson, Headteacher
