Year 9 Learning
All pupils in Year 9 attended a Learning Conference in the Main Hall on Wednesday 5 October. Pupils were given the opportunity to understand the options process and to think about future choices, to think ahead to make sure that they are well prepared for their learning in Key Stage 4 and to understand how they can help their learning, both inside and outside of school.
Pupils were asked to reflect on their current strengths and areas for improvement, as well as to think ahead and consider the types of careers they may wish to pursue. Mrs Lang, Deputy Head, and Assistant Head Miss Brace explained how important it is for Year 9 pupils to start thinking about their futures now rather than leaving it until the last minute. Miss Moss, Year 9 Coordinator, discussed the importance of having aspirations and goals to aim for, in order to focus the mind and to give lessons a greater sense of purpose.

Mrs Lang encouraged pupils to think about how to create a positive learning space at home so that study and homework is done in a suitable, calm environment, importantly without access to social media or mobile phones. Pupils also practised some interesting techniques to improve their memory and learning skills.
"We have learnt more about the ideal learning space, e.g. that it shouldn’t be on your bed and that if listening to music whilst working, it is better to listen to music without words. We were interested that plants can also help with your work." Year 9 pupils

In the evening, parents and guardians of Year 9 pupils were invited to attend a similar conference. They were given suggestions and guidance about how to support their child through the options process and transition into Key Stage 4 and how to support their child’s learning at home. Additionally, memory techniques to support revision and learning were discussed and shared. The evening conference was very well attended and there was a high level of engagement in the activities.
We really enjoyed the evening as it gave us a greater insight into the learning methods being used to teach our child and how we can help him perform better as he approaches this important time in his education.

We believe that the Learning Conferences we provide at Cirencester Deer Park School strengthen the learning triangle between teachers, pupils and parents. Working together in this way helps to support pupils in achieving the best possible outcomes. We hope that Year 9 pupils are now focused on their futures, their aspirations and are starting to think more carefully about the subjects they might choose at GCSE, in preparation for Key Stage 4.
