National Poetry Day

Writers' Den collaborate on a poem for National Poetry Day

Writers' Den is open to all pupils in Year 7-10 and works on developing creative writing skills, whether poetry or stories. The writers try to enter as many competitions as they can, to boost the confidence in their own writing.

"We have always done a group poem for National Poetry Day. The 2024 theme - Counting - was a bit difficult, but pupils were great at coming up with ideas and tackling the challenge of writing a rhyming couplet each that linked to a given month of the school year." Miss Flint, English Teacher

COUNTING

Our theme of counting is one we know well,
As we pass through the months, we may feel unwell.

Back to school after a tiring New Years,
Snoozing in class is one of my fears.

The month of love arrives for two,
February half term is finally in view.

A month of nothing: in March we wait
Bored, tired and sad: I hope I’m not late.

April fools is a day for a pun,
Easter with chocolate and eggs is fun.

The last days of your year approach to help a sudden switch,
May is ending and June is coming – time feels like a glitch.

In June we move up to our new years,
In hope that we are able to still find our peers.

July is time to start counting down this year,
Until this summer will finally appear.

It’s August again and there’s finally a break.
Refreshing, relaxing and no tests to date.

The six weeks are over, and we must remember,
The equipment that’s needed for our start in September.

A month with one week off, it’s a slog of a year
Get here quick before I shed a tear.

Teachers talk of Plotter’s treason,
November falls in the coldest season.

December is here, and Christmas has arrived.
Opening presents having a laugh; the year I survived.
