Writer Visit
Visit by writer and ultrarunner Sabrina Pace-Humphreys
On Tuesday 24 January 2023, pupils in Year 8 and Year 9 listened to a talk with visiting local writer, Sabrina Pace-Humphreys - author, ultrarunner, award-winning businesswoman and social justice activist. In her first book, the biography ‘Black Sheep’, Sabrina writes about her experiences as a mixed-race girl growing up in a rural town.
Undeniably, identity and understanding one’s own identity are key issues in society today. Through her work with various charity organisations, Sabrina seeks to help people who face these issues. During the talk, Sabrina very openly shared her story, which included some of the harsh realities she was faced with as a teenager. In addition, she offered advice about having a voice and being an advocate for change.
Pupils were engaged and inspired listening to Sabrina, who also talked about running ultramarathons, including the Marathon des Sables (six days running 156 miles in the Sahara Desert) and the Spine Race which follows the Pennine Way National Trail (268 miles).
At the end of the talk, pupils were encouraged to ask Sabrina questions about anything she had discussed. Pupils were forthcoming with some insightful questions ranging from ‘what was the most enjoyable part of writing?’ to ‘if you could go back and change anything, what would it be?’
Mollie in Year 8 stayed behind to ask some more questions and said afterwards ‘that was so inspiring!’ Comments from Year 9 pupils include ‘It was very interesting to hear a different angle about growing up in Stroud’ and ‘It makes you really think about growing up around here and whether things have changed or not’.
Our pupils listened with respect and the discussion enabled them to be reflective on the many topics spoken about. Overall, we hope that Sabrina's visit left our pupils feeling encouraged and inspired to speak up for what they believe in.
