Year 10 Learning
Year 10 Learning Conference
On Wednesday 10 November 2022, Year 10 parents and carers attended our Year 10 Learning and Curriculum Evening, following that morning's Learning Conference for our Year 10 pupils. Topics covered during the evening ranged from logistics around work experience to effective revision techniques, how to take notes effectively and a reappearance of the fabled Chinese Bamboo Tree presentation.
The principles driving the conference were:
- Pupils should be taught to revise using effective techniques;
- When, How, Where, What and crucially, WHY should be known by pupils and their families;
- Little and often will reduce exam stress and build knowledge and skills;
- Revision in Key Stage 4, as we near public exams, needs to be strategic as well as retrieving knowledge.
Particular attention was paid towards the use of exam specifications, mark schemes and examiner reports to help improve effectiveness of using past papers as a revision technique. The creation and effective use of flash cards was also modelled through a short demonstration of the Leitner Method, and a practical session on using DSK (Delete Substitute Keep) as an effective note-taking method was shared.
The overarching aim of the conference was to share effective ways in which families can support Year 10 pupils in forming good revision habits now, without needing to be expert in any subject their children are studying.
One Year 10 parent commented: 'A fabulous session; as someone who WAS fortunate enough to have been taught to revise - and who has been mystified at the lack of similar instruction available more generally - it really was hugely appreciated.'
For those parents and carers unable to attend, and any families who wish to revisit sections of the conference, a narrated version of the conference made by Mr Clutterbuck is below.
The Deer Park Learning Conferences will return next year with separate events for Year 9 and Year 8 taking place on Wednesday 18 January 2023 and Wednesday 1 February 2023 respectively.
