Primary Area Athletics
Primary Area Athletics at Cirencester Deer Park School
Cirencester Deer Park hosted a Primary Area Athletics event in the morning of Thursday 23 June 2022 on our sports fields. Nearly 500 primary pupils were involved! They had qualified from their District events in the following areas: Cirencester Deer Park, Cirencester Kingshill, Farmor's and Sir William Romney's. Over 30 primary schools were represented at this event!
Despite it looking at one point like it would rain, we were fortunate to have dry weather throughout the morning. This allowed for a range of fun-filled athletics events to take place. Track events included 50m sprint, 80m sprint, 600m race, skipping races, track relay races and shuttle relay races. Field events included ball throw, speed bounce, standing broad jump and standing triple jump. Year 3 and Year 4 pupils initially completed track events whilst Year 5 and Year 6 completed field events. Halfway through the morning the pupils swapped from track to field or field to track.
PE Teacher and Primary Sport Coordinator Mr Cumming said 'It was great to see so many pupils competing in an athletics event. This was the first time we have been able to run this event since pre-Covid. The pupils demonstrated superb determination and athletic ability combined with excellent enthusiasm.'
The quality of each primary event is directly related to the outstanding efforts from our Young Sports Leaders. Following the success of the first District event, our (new) Year 9 Young Leaders were in the same job roles, allowing them to increase their confidence and fine-tune skills they had practised previously. The roles included race starters, results recorders, track positions stewards, photo finish judges and field event judges. Mr Cumming said 'The Young Sports Leaders set a high standard. Our pupils showed excellent organisation and communication skills and performed their roles in a calm and efficient manner which made this event very successful once again.'
Arthur W said 'It was really nice to see pupils competing like I used to. I used to look up to the Young Leaders, so it has been great to become one myself.'
Caitlin U said 'I was a race starter. It was a really enjoyable morning and fun working with the primary pupils to help them become more confident in athletics.'
Our thanks to The Friends of Deer Park who provided welcome refreshments!
