Hot on the heels of our in-school production of Matilda the Musical Jr, on Wednesday 9 March 2022 our Year 10 and Year 11 GCSE Drama pupils travelled to the Theatre Royal Bath to see Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers, the set text that they study for the course.

Seeing a play or musical performed on stage brings the written text to life and it was lovely to once again be able to take pupils to see a performance in person. Pupils talked after the show of how they laughed, cried and jumped out of their seats at the high-quality touring company.

Rory said ‘The performance was very engaging and exciting! I thought it was very beneficial in helping me understand the plot ready for my exam in May.’

Blood Brothers first came to the stage in the 1980s and is based in Liverpool around the story of a set of twins, who are separated at birth and have very different upbringings. The examination of nature vs nurture continues to provide a healthy debate in class and helps pupils consider the impact of social, political and cultural issues in Britain across four decades.

Mrs Gleed, Head of Expressive Arts said ‘It was really lovely to take pupils to the theatre again. The buzz during the interval and after the show was really fantastic. It was a great first trip back to the theatre as a school!’

Of course, being Drama students, there was an impromptu singsong on the coach home!
