Mental Health Awareness Week

It is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK, 18-24 May 2020, with the theme of kindness.

We may look back at 2020 as a time when mental health awareness became paramount. As people face uncertainty regarding health, their employment and the future, at Deer Park we continue to help our pupils with their education so that they can become the best that they can be. But we know that some pupils and parents are finding this time particularly difficult.

If pupils wish to talk with someone outside of their household about something that worries them, they can contact their tutor or year leader, or their teacher if the questions are curriculum-based. Parents can contact our Pastoral team. Go to Staff for contact details.

As this short video espouses,  KINDNESS can make a huge difference to peoples' lives, whether someone does something kind for you or you do something for someone else.

Whilst it is less easy to do one off random acts of kindness whilst at home and/or social distancing, there are multiple examples in these uncertain times of neighbours reaching out to neighbours, of people volunteering their time or their skills to help others, particularly in their local community.  Perhaps another kinder society will emerge from this time of coronavirus.

Some suggestions for your mental health:
 

Exercise regularly, whether a walk around the block, some gentle yoga, a run or a bike ride. Remember that, as announced on 11 May, we can now exercise more often.

Spend time outside if you can, appreciating nature at its finest in this time of growth and Spring. Can you enjoy star-filled skies from your garden?

Read and share 'The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse' by Charlie Mackesy. This really is a book for our times as it reminds us of the important things in our lives.

We can now meet up with one other person from another household, whilst remaining socially distanced. Arrange to chat face-to-face with a friend.

Make time for quality time with family. Play games and get creative with those in your house. Keep in touch with other family members, especially those on their own.

Learn how to practice Mindfulness. Find some space for you. Focus on the now, breathe, and find out how to calm your mind and your body.
