Friends' Sushi
Making sushi and raising funds
On Saturday 7 March 2020, The Friends of Deer Park held a fundraising Sushi Workshop in the new Food Preparation and Nutrition classroom at Cirencester Deer Park School.
Taking the unusual step of heading in to school on a Saturday morning, 26 adults and teenagers keenly gathered in the new Food room at Deer Park to learn from local chef Jay Harley how to make sushi. The Friends are hugely grateful to Jay, who led the workshop and showed everyone how to make maki rolls, uramaki rolls and nigiri sushi, and to Relish Event Catering for sourcing the ingredients.
Anyone who has eaten good, fresh sushi and enjoyed it (and what's not to like?) will be able to tell you how healthy it can make you feel. Simple ingredients, beautifully presented. If you are interested in making sushi at home (eg BBC Good Food), you could accompany it with miso soup, edamame, or wakame (seaweed) salad.
"Thank you @CDPSfriends - the whole family had a blast. Youngest even tried some new foods. Mine was the best obvs." Parent
“I really enjoyed the Sushi Workshop. It was great to be able to experiment with the ingredients and make different types of sushi.” Year 11 pupil
"It was great to see parents and students creating delicious Japanese treats at the Friends of Deer Park fundraising sushi workshop on Saturday. A big thank you to everyone who took part in the Friends' first ever cookery class." Friends' Committee Member
Assistant Head Miss Brace commented "Our thanks to the Friends of Deer Park for their incredible and ongoing support of the school and a huge thank you to Jay and Relish for supporting this successful event. Are you a parent who has professional culinary skills that you could potentially share with a group of parents and pupils in another food workshop? Please email friends@deerparkschool.net if you are interested in getting involved and supporting your school."
The Friends are looking at what the next big fundraising events might be: a Car Boot Sale in May for example? A Splash Party for Year 7s in July? Another Cookery Class in October?
The Friends of Deer Park are a small, friendly group of parents of pupils in all year groups, as well as staff representatives, who want to support the school in which our children belong. All funds raised are used for projects and initiatives that enrich pupils' learning at school. Find out more...
