Primary Athletics

On Wednesday 7 June, Cirencester Deer Park School hosted the annual Primary District Athletics competition.

This event involved seven schools and over 300 local Key Stage 2 pupils (aged 7-11) competing in a range of track and field events, such as the 50m sprint and long jump. The primary school pupils performed superbly and showed a real excitement about coming to Deer Park to use our sports facilities.

To help run the event successfully, PE Teacher and Primary Sports Coordinator, Mr Cumming used Deer Park’s 20 new Year 9 Young Sports Leaders and 18 new Year 10 Games Captains. Prior to half term, these Year 8 and Year 9 pupils had successfully submitted their written applications to the PE Faculty for a leadership role. Having been selected, they demonstrated excellent commitment to their leadership programmes by attending training sessions prior to the event, where they learnt how to administer their job role for the day, for example managing field events such as the long jump, recording results, being placement judges and race starters.  During this District competition, our pupils demonstrated a real caring and helpful attitude and completed their jobs efficiently and professionally.

Congratulations to all our Young Leaders and Games Captains for completing their first event. Young Sports Leader Issac said: “It was really good and it was fun to help the younger people from the different schools around the area.”

Chesterton Primary School teacher Miss Liddle emailed after the event to say: “Thank you so much for putting on today's event, and thanks to your Young Leaders too. It is such a wonderful opportunity for so many children to get involved.”

Our next event is Primary Area Athletics on Monday 26 June. We look forward to welcoming pupils from across the Cotswold District.
