Young Singer of the Year
Another exciting week for Expressive Arts at Cirencester Deer Park School as we hosted the very first Young Singer of the Year on Tuesday 23 May. Following the success of the well established Young Musician of the Year, singers at Deer Park had to opportunity to display their talent.
The evening followed 20 acts across all year groups, abilities and styles, from Salba in Year 7 singing ‘Lego House’ by Ed Sheeran to Mia in Year 10 performing ‘Popular’ from the musical 'Wicked'. All performers had been rehearsing with Music teacher Miss Faux for several weeks prior to the evening and for some pupils this was their first performance opportunity.
We welcomed two external judges, Lisa Mayo (Head of Gloucestershire Music) and Matthew Kapp (professional singer and dancer) to Deer Park. They had the incredibly difficult task of deciding on our two winners: Junior and Senior Young Singer of the Year. We also enjoyed a performance from Matthew at the end of the evening, giving pupils the chance to see an outstanding professional performance from someone who started out in similar settings to themselves and who, through determination and hard work, has made a living out of his voice.
May in Year 9 took the Senior Winner award for her captivating performance of ‘Summertime’ by Gershwin and Hazel in Year 8 was awarded Junior Winner for her performance of ‘Colours of the Wind' from 'Pocahontas'. Both were beautifully performed and controlled.
"I was really shocked that I won the Junior award. I had such a fun evening and really enjoyed the whole process, plus being able to see the other performers as well. I am looking forward to it next year." Hazel Year 8
The Outstanding Performance certificates for the Juniors went to Max and Molly in Year 8 who judges commended on the maturity of their voices at such a young age and ability to control and understand their voice. Evie and Reanna in Year 10 and Emily in Year 9 picked up Outstanding Performance certificates for their animated and characterful performances for the Seniors.
"It was such a great experience and it has helped me build my confidence even more." Molly, Year 8
It was a very joyful evening displaying the real vocal talent there is at Deer Park and debuting some exciting voices for the future!
Many the performers who took part are now straight into preparing for auditions for our upcoming musical, 'Legally Blonde Jr'.
"I am very proud of all pupils who performed in Young Singer of the Year, they all worked incredibly hard and all gained a lot from the experience. Opportunities like this are so important for young people to develop their confidence, resilience and performance skills." Miss Faux, Music teacher
"Young Singer of the Year was the perfect evening to get excited about the up and coming talent from young people. The quality of performances and the talent in this school is outstanding, I particularly enjoyed the Junior Winner for her strong vocals and confidence with such a challenging song. It was a beautiful evening in a beautiful venue and I was really honoured to be there." Matthew Kapp, Judge
