Essential tools for success in Key Stage 4

Year 10 Learning Conference

On the morning of Wednesday 6 November 2024, lesson 1, Year 10 pupils came together for their annual Learning Conference, designed to provide them with essential tools to succeed in Key Stage 4. The conference focused on three key areas: work experience, memory and learning strategies, and the importance of setting goals.

Work Experience

Pupils were reminded that there are just 10 school weeks left to organise their work experience placements. The deadline for them to return their forms to Mrs Stubbs, Year 10 Year Leader, is Friday 24 January 2025. Pupils can find a copy of the form on their Satchel:One if they have lost the form that was given to them before half term (there is also a copy on our Letters page). It was emphasised that the most successful placements are often arranged independently by the pupils, rather than relying on the school. Past placements have been varied and include opportunities in architects, veterinary practices, cafes, shops, hair salons, farms, offices and garden centres.

Memory and Learning Strategies

The conference also focused on effective learning techniques. Pupils were taught how to “chunk” their learning to manage cognitive load, how to use mind maps to organise information, and how to create effective flashcards for revision. They were also introduced to the Leitner method of self-testing, which helps reinforce knowledge through spaced repetition.

The Importance of Setting Goals

Finally, pupils were encouraged to reflect on their long-term goals. Setting goals provides direction and motivation, especially when challenges arise. By understanding what they are working towards, pupils can stay focused and driven. As a school, we are committed to helping pupils develop into successful young adults, and part of that journey is guiding them to define their goals and the steps they can take to achieve them.

The Parents Conference

We were delighted to have more than 80 parents/carers join us for an hour on the evening of Wednesday 6 November, where we covered the themes we had covered with pupils earlier in the day. We really value the school-parent/carer relationship for all year groups and know that the support parents/carers can provide their children is invaluable in helping each child achieve their best possible outcomes.
