High School Musical Taster Evening

Two high school students, who are poles apart, secretly decide to audition for their school’s musical. When they discover they both might have a passion for singing, they take their place in the spotlight, setting off a chain of events that puts all of 'East High' into a musical frenzy.
Much like the leads in High School Musical, Troy and Gabriella, our pupils too showed commitment and dedication on Thursday 9 November 2023. Their weeks of rehearsals, practice and prep were reflected in the creative show on stage at our High School Musical Taster Evening, which had the audience in the Main Hall full of excitement and parents beaming with pride!
Over the past few weeks and months, we have had so many auditions and so much work has been put into the show. Mrs Gleed and the Expressive Arts team have dedicated themselves to this performance, ensuring that pupils know their lines, have their costumes, planning, choreography, and props for the set. Not only did we have pupils signing up for roles in the show, but we also had pupils behind the scenes designing props, the band practising their songs and the tech team checking lighting and sound for the production.

Bringing the Taster Evening together, we had bloopers, pupils' comments, audition and rehearsals recordings, songs, and dances. Pupils shared their experience from the past few weeks, their past performances, what roles they auditioned for and what they hoped for in the final production of High School Musical. The bloopers and rehearsal recordings gave the audience a 'behind the scenes' view and the effort being put in by pupils and staff. We had pupils in costumes, the tech team and the band in focus, and the staff in full prep mode – all bringing together what we can call a successful evening.
We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone that came along to support us, making the Taster Evening a huge success, and we hope to see you all in February 2024 when this whole school musical will be on stage for our final performances!

“Prop making was a fun way for people who prefer not to get involved with the acting and singing side of the musical to come together and have fun with the arts and creative side of painting, drawing, and making of props. It was a way to be involved without having to be on stage and I really enjoyed it.” Maddie (Year 9)
“I think performing in the musical is one of the biggest opportunities you can have at Deer Park School. I have enjoyed every bit of the musical as it's given me the confidence to dance and sing with others around me. When I first auditioned, I was very scared to not get a part; now I look back and realise it's not about having a main role, it's about taking part and taking that step out of your comfort zone. Being part of the musical is the best choice I've ever made and I would do it again and again. Performing in the musical was quite scary but we did it and got through it as a team. I'm super happy with myself and the rest of our amazing cast!” Phoebe (Year 10)
