Young Singers 2023
Young Singer of the Year 2023
Our annual Young Singer of the Year evening on Tuesday 28 March 2023 showcased yet again the incredible talent we find at Cirencester Deer Park School. The standard was set high from the outset, from previous winner, Bradley (Year 10), performing his rendition of 'Stars' from Les Misérables all the way through to Lizzi’s (Year 10) animated and impressive performance of 'The Wizard and I' from Wicked. There was a lovely range of styles performed.
Young Singer has been in the calendar since 2017 and this year there were 3 singers - Isabel, Martha and Charlotte - who have taken part every year since 2019; we are incredibly proud of how far they have all come since Year 7.
In addition to experienced performers, we had several debut performances: Emily in Year 10 stepped out from behind her guitar and accompanied herself on the piano singing 'Make You Feel My Love', and Heidi in Year 9 took to the stage for the first time with her performance of 'Read All About It'.
We welcomed Headteacher Mr Clutterbuck, Mrs Chaplin and Miss Garry as judges, alongside special guest judge and former pupil Rosa Evans. Rosa wowed the audience with the song she sang in the Young Singer 2019 at the end of the evening.
Key Stage 3 Young Singers
Winner: Coco (Year 9) with her acoustic performance of 'Put Your Records On'. Judges commented on her lovely tone of voice and engaging performance.
Runners Up: Flo, Isabelle and Iris.
Coco: 'This was a new experience for me. I am so glad I decided to take part and was very surprised that I won. It was really nice to see all the other performers on the night do so well.'
Key Stage 4 Young Singers
Winner: Sasha (Year 10) for her powerful and heartfelt performance of Traitor. Judge, Rosa Evans commented that it was incredible how she made that song completely her own and added so much emotion to it.
Runners Up: Bradley, Amber and Lizzi.
Sasha: 'I was so shocked to have won but very happy to receive the award. I absolutely loved watching all the talented performers.'
Audience member Maisie commented 'It was a really nice evening, it was really well organised and felt like a professional concert. All of the singers were amazing!'
Miss Garry, one of the judges, said 'Wow – what a lot of talent there is at this school! It was a pleasure to be on the judging panel for this year’s Young Singer, but an almost impossible task as all of the performers did an incredible job! Well done all staff and pupils involved – a really enjoyable evening of wonderful singing and a supportive and encouraging atmosphere for all of the Young Singers.'
One of our parents commented on social media, "Not only is #Cirencester the best place to live (a reference to a recent Sunday TImes article) but it hosts the best Expressive Arts teachers inside the ❤️ of the best secondary school."
Music Teacher Miss Faux, who organises the Young Singer event, shared 'I am incredibly proud of all our young singers this week, those who took to the stage for the first time and those who have been with us for years. They have all worked so hard on their songs and performances and it is always such a pleasure to see them up there going for it.'
