Musical Announcement!

On stage at Cirencester Deer Park School in February/March 2022...

We are absolutely thrilled to announce we have secured the rights for our next whole school musical, Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical JR.

The story follows Matilda Wormwood, a gifted girl forced to put up with a crude, distant father and mother. Worse, Agatha Trunchbull, the evil principal at Matilda's school, is a terrifyingly strict bully. However, when Matilda realises she has the power of telekinesis, she begins to defend her friends from Trunchbull's wrath and fight back against her unkind parents.

The musical is written by playwright Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by the anarchic Australian comedian, musician and composer Tim Minchin, and direction by Matthew Warchus. Matilda The Musical is produced in the West End by the Royal Shakespeare Company where it premiered in 2011.

Matilda is a great choice for our next school production. I share our Expressive Arts team’s and pupils’ excitement and look forward to another great show coming together. Roald Dahl’s story includes some truly memorable characters and deals with issues relevant to today. Hopefully Matilda’s voracious appetite for reading will encourage more pupils to read for pleasure!

In the run-up to the May 2021 half term, we have been releasing clues each day to there has been a build up in school to the announcement of what the show would be, with a clue relating to the show revealed each day.

Mrs Gleed, Head of Expressive Arts commented: ‘I have been bombarded by guesses from pupils and pleas from staff to find out what it is all week! It’s really great that everyone has been so excited. The clues really worked a treat.’

Jenny in Year 8 said ‘After the first clue was revealed, my entire tutor group went into a big discussion of what it could be. We weren’t sure until the Wednesday clue, which was a chocolate cake recipe, and we thought it must be Matilda! I love the musical and I can’t wait to get involved in the show.’

Our Expressive Arts team have created a website for pupils, which includes information on the characters and the skills required for each role, plus dates of workshops and auditions and how to sign up for these.

Pupils need to sign up in advance to attend a workshop. The workshops and auditions will begin in June 2021. There will be information posted on Show My Homework to remind pupils.

Bradley (Year 9), who was in our previous whole school musical, Grease, said ‘I am excited to get involved in another musical and perform again. I am also really pleased with the choice as it is something completely different to what we have done before.’

We are already excited to see the show performed in February/March 2022!
