This week a group of Year 7s took part in a collaborative workshop with Voices Together with the ultimate aim of creating a song about starting secondary school.
After a series of warm-up exercises, the group, led by Amy and Molly, were played music and lyrics that had already been devised by Year 6 pupils at primary schools within Corinium Trust. This had all been inspired by pupils’ feelings about starting secondary school.
Having broken out into pairs, students reflected on their own recent experience of starting at Deer Park, to create lyrics that included reassuring messages and advice.
Their words included sentiments such as:
“It may feel big but you’ll soon find your way”
“Don’t be scared, lessons are fun and teachers care”
“It’ll be OK, even when skies are blurry and grey”
“Though you’ll see friends go, there will be new ones to know”
With their lyrics recorded, Amy moved onto the music, providing options for chords and re-playing the primary schools’ tune for the Year 7s to build on. They sang, hummed and played their ideas back to Amy, who recorded them to develop further at a later point.
By the end of the session, Amy and Molly had captured some powerful lyrics and the foundations for an emotive piece of music – an amalgamation of creative input from schools across the whole Trust.
The next step will be to put it all together, ready to be recorded here at Deer Park by all the Year 6 and Year 7 songwriters involved – watch this space!
