Ms Barnwell and Mr Ellen enjoyed taking a group of Year 10 students to Lady Margaret Hall, University of Oxford this week.
“Students had the opportunity to explore the campus and experience the academic environment first hand. They day included a guided walk around key areas of the university, giving students insight into university life and facilities. They also took part in an academic taster session, which introduced them to the style and expectations of higher-level study. One was Maths/Science based making them think outside the box about the properties that define shapes, using creative thinking, proof and reasoning to show that a square, triangle and circle could be considered the same! The other was History based on How ‘Roman’ was the Roman Empire? Both very interesting and informative talks.
During the visit, students were provided with information and guidance on A-level subject choices and how these can influence future university options. A question-and-answer session with current students at Oxford covered pathways into higher education, entry requirements, and the benefits of university study not just academically but socially too.
While on the trip, students were provided with lunch in one of the splendid university dining halls, allowing them to experience a typical aspect of student life. We also met Mr Ellen’s son, Torby who is a student at Oxford (CDPS Class of 2023 – Currently 1st Year studying Earth Sciences, Exeter College) so that was wonderful for our students to meet an ex-Deer Park student who has made that transition to Oxford.
The trip aimed to raise aspirations, support informed decision making, and give students a clearer understanding of their potential next steps after GCSE’s.
It was a stunning day enjoyed by staff and students!” – Ms Barnwell (Year 10 Year Leader)
