Reading for Good

Students spend the day reading for pleasure, changing lives in the process

55 students from Years 7 to 10 spent a whole day reading for pleasure this week, as part of the Read for Good Readathon.

Having gained sponsorship pledges and chosen their books, students settled down in the school library on a comfy chair or beanbag and escaped into a different world. For one day only they were permitted to rearrange furniture and use blankets to construct reading dens to snuggle up in. Stopping only for breaks and hot chocolate and biscuits, this was a chance to take a break from timetables and indulge in the simple joy of reading.

The money raised by this event buys books and funds storyteller visits for our nearest children’s hospital, it also helps to stock our own library as the school receives a voucher for use at the Scholastic Book Club.

Research conducted in a partnership between BookTrust and the Open University found that children who read are more likely to succeed academically and emotionally.

We ask that all Year 8 students carry a reading book in their bag at all times, ensuring they always have something purposeful to engage with during reading opportunities, tutor time, or any moment of downtime. Having a book readily available also helps us build a consistent reading culture and gives students frequent chances to practise and enjoy reading. There is nothing to stop other year groups doing the same.

There are fiction, non-fiction and graphic novels to suit every taste and we publish a recommended reading list for each key stage, which can be accessed by clicking below.
